‘Red Vest Day’ moves VCP closer to doubling capacity in Sioux Falls

Veterans Community Project (VCP) is now closer to doubling our capacity of transitional housing for Veterans experiencing homelessness in Sioux Falls, thanks to a partnership with Lowe’s.

On Thursday, August 29, Lowe’s employees came out to paint tiny homes, build a privacy fence and more at VCP of Sioux Falls. The volunteer event was an extension of the 2024 Lowe’s Hometowns signature grant program, through which the company donated $305,000 for VCP to expand our tiny home village in Sioux Falls from five to 10 move-in-ready units, build five more units up through the drywall phase, and add the privacy fence. Construction of each of those elements will be complete in November.

“It truly takes a community, and we are grateful for the generosity of Lowe’s and our key Sioux Falls partners who have joined the mission to get our nation’s Veterans back on their feet and to ensure they continue standing in our community,” said VCP of Sioux Falls Executive Director John Holter.

At VCP of Sioux Falls, which is one of four VCP locations across the country, we welcomed our first residents last fall. Nationally since our founding in 2016, our model of transitional housing with wraparound services and extended support has demonstrated an 85% successful transition rate to long-term housing.

We proudly work with local partners to help make that transition possible. The Hometowns grant, for example, resulted from a nomination by the store management team of Lowe’s in Sioux Falls.

That’s part of the intent, according to Lowe’s Chairman and CEO Marvin Ellison. In announcing the annual grants, he said, “Lowe’s Hometowns is all about bringing neighbors together to improve shared spaces and our communities.”

For the VCP team, it was deeply moving that our neighbors chose to advocate for and join our mission to fix Veteran homelessness.

“When they surprised us,” VCP of Sioux Falls Director of Development Alisha Grove reflects, “there were tears.”
