Earlier this year, Veterans Community Project lost dedicated and passionate volunteer Janet Louise Cairns, after she lost a valiant battle with metastatic melanoma. Janet was a registered nurse and worked on a team at Cerner improving medical records for the VA. Though not a Veteran herself, Janet considered working for Veterans to be an honor and had spent time with her Cerner teammates planting trees at VCP.

Janet’s husband Mark and daughters Mary and Grace (pictured below) remember her for her service to others and for her dedication to helping Veterans in need. Grace tells VCP “Janet found great joy and purpose through helping others and seeing others succeed.” According to Mark, “Janet enjoyed every moment she spent digging holes to plant trees on VCP property. Bringing a little joy to a Veteran was very important to her.”

In her memory, Janet’s family collected donations for VCP totaling nearly $4,000 that were used to beautify and landscape the VCP Village Community Center grounds in July. Her family chose VCP, knowing of her positive volunteer experience and desire to make a direct impact on the lives of Veterans in Kansas City. Janet's mark in creating a beautiful and inviting community will forever be seen and felt at VCP Village.
